About us

The Writtle Garden & Allotment Society is a long established (at least 70 years), welcoming and experienced group that exists to promote and support the interests of both allotmenteers and gardeners in the village and surrounding area. The Society is managed by a Committee of enthusiastic volunteers who manage the activities of the Society on behalf of its members.

The Trading Hut is operated by volunteers at the Oxney Road allotments every Sunday morning from mid-February to the end of October (10.00 – 12.15). Our knowledgeable volunteers can give advice if you are new to the world of allotments and vegetable growing. In addition members of the Society can buy fertilisers, canes and anything else they may need to make their growing a success. Every winter members are able to order discounted seeds in advance of the next growing season.

Once a year the Society organises a show where gardeners can exhibit the fruit of their labours. There are classes for vegetables, fruits, cut flowers, pot plants, flower arrangements, jams, baking, as well as handicrafts, photography and children’s classes.

The Society organises social events and visits to gardens of interest both locally and further afield, as well as inviting speakers to give talks on aspects of gardening. An Annual General Meeting is held in the last quarter of the year which gives members the opportunity to raise issues of concern for the Society and also to elect the members of the Committee.

Society membership is £5 per year (2025/26) and entitles members to discounts across a number of local businesses and supports the society’s efforts to promote gardening and allotmenteering in the village and surrounding area.

We would welcome people interested in volunteering to help with the Society’s activities. Our volunteers range from those who commit to regular shifts in the Trading Hut to an occasional hour or two for specific events such as our shows. If you are interested in offering your help then please contact us for a chat about how you could help.
