Who is eligible to rent an allotment?
Anyone living within Writtle or the surrounding area may rent a plot.
Location of allotments
Writtle has two allotment sites within the village (Oxney Green and The Chase). The Oxney Green allotments are bounded by Ongar Road, Victoria Road and East View and are accessed from Victoria Road and East View. The Trading Hut is accessed from Victoria Road. The Chase allotments are accessed via Mayfield Road (turning off Ongar Road, opposite Prestons Garage).
How to apply for an allotment
Plots are available from Writtle Parish Council as half or whole plots. Please contact Justine Atterbury via email at admin@writtle-pc.gov.uk or phone 01245 420066.
Annual rental
The annual rent for 2024/25 is £37 for a full plot and £21 for a half plot. The rental includes the water supply from troughs. Rentals are renewed in October via the Parish Council.
Plot availability (November 2024)
Oxney Green: Three full plots and 7 half plots.
The Chase: Two full plots and five half plots.
Several of these available plots are in excellent condition and would be great for a beginner to get started on.
If no plots are available in the village you might like to see if one is available nearby by looking at Chelmsford City Council’s website.
Help with your allotment
The volunteers who work in the Trading Hut are able to offer general advice on managing your allotment. We are also recruiting volunteers who can offer some practical help with clearing your plot and preparing it for cultivation.
